Dear Readers,
My little hiatus from blogging was much needed, but I’m glad to be back writing on a bi-weekly basis for UCP-CM! I hope you had a good summer. Mine was filled to the brim and zoomed past all too quickly. With another school year off and running, I thought it might be nice to share with you two great books and one unbelievable podcast that I have come across in the past few months all dealing with physical disability. I know you will enjoy!

Wonder by R. J. Palacio
My name is August, by the way. I won’t describe what I look like. Whatever you’re thinking, it’s probably worse….
Wonder is the story of Auggie, a fifth grade student with severe cranial-facial deformity who is attending school for the first time. This story gives an honest portrayal of the struggle for acceptance and friendship when living with a physical disability. Appropriate for upper elementary and middle school students; I even enjoyed this one as an adult. Wonder is R. J. Palacio’s first novel. Watch the book trailer on YouTube.
Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper
I have no idea how I untangled the complicated process of words and thought, but it happened quickly and naturally…but only in my head. I have never spoken one single word. I am almost 11 years old. This is the story of Melody, a fifth grade student with cerebral palsy. Melody uses a wheel chair, attends special education classes, and is non-verbal. Life begins to change when Melody is introduced to integrated instruction and assistive technology. Slowly, Melody is able to communicate and interact with her peers for the first time—expressing what’s in her heart, getting her thoughts out of her mind. This story builds to an intriguing climax with a poignant surprise ending. Out of My Mind has been nominated for a Maud Hart Lovelace Award this year. Watch the book trailer.

What if you grew up never knowing you had CP? What if the day you found out was the day you were invited to join the Paralympic soccer team? I found this story while searching through iTunes and was very entertained. I know you will enjoy!
